Ocean Beach

That is the dumbest name for a beach I have ever heard. I think it's pointless to have named something ocean beach. Whoever named it was clearly bored and had run out of ideas.

So here i am in the middle of Starbucks™ having a debate about why that is the dumbest name for a beach ever. My reasoning is that there is no need to put the word ocean in front of beach; it is already implied. Even if you don't know that you're going to an ocean, you know there is going to be some body of water involved with a beach.

Nevertheless, this is a photo of the oh so beautiful but ever so dumbly named Ocean Beach, in San Francisco.

Las Fallas

There was no way I was going to miss out on this. After at first being disheartened by the fact that there was no space available at any of the hostels (yes, hostels!) that all of my friends would be staying at, I thought I couldn't go. But then, in what was surely some sort of sign (ok not really, more just like a convenient coincedence), someone backed out of the trip and offered me their spot! I was going to Las Fallas, a yearly celebration held in Valencia, Spain.

So I'll be the first to admit that I didn't really know what the Fallas were about, but that was beside the point; I had to go. After getting my lodging and bus ticket all squared away, I turned to my school schedule as an after thought. Another sign: we had a project due on the day I was scheduled to leave. Great.

I don't know what I was expecting when I sent my professor an email, telling her the truth about why I wouldn't be in class the upcoming Thursday and pleading to either turn in the project early or take half credit to turn it in late. But no, she said it simply couldn't be done, and that it would be unfair to the other students who were attending class that day. Ha! Little did she know, 75% of the class was going to be on the same bus that I was, heading to the celebration! Shouldn't my honesty have counted for something? I guess not, since honesty is supposedly its own reward (or some zen saying like that).

Needless to say, I packed up my bag and went, practicing what I had learned from numerous yoga classes: clearing my mind of all my problems. We arrived at the end of the week-long celebration, walking around and taking pictures and reveling in the magnificence that were the Fallas. The picture above can only hint at the sheer magnitude of these constructions. Almost as tall as average four-story apartment buildings, they stood towering in the middle of streets and causing the flow of the entire city to yield to them. And the best part? At the end of the festival, the burn them! Yes, set them on fire! Personally, I think that's where the name was derived from, not the Latin root word for torch as history suggests. It's one of the best bonfires I have ever attended, with thousands of people swarming the streets to watch the fallas burn.

So, even though I missed out on some credit for one of my projects, I got to experience something that I may never have the opportunity to again. And I did it with people who are now my close friend, with whom I can share a cherished memory forever.

A Slice of Life

London-town. I had been left to my own devices to explore the metropolitan city, since I wasn't meeting up with my friend until the next day. I didn't want to see anything too touristy, since I was sure we'd hit all the major sights together. So I walked around aimlessly, just taking in the city's vibes. I had heard great things about their salsa dancing scene, but that wouldn't be for at least another 6 hours.

It was raining, but I wasn't complaining since that was part of the London charm; always dreary and lively at the same time. After only having arrived fresh off the train a couple hours ago, I could attest to the vibrancy of the place. People were hustling and bustling, and it was swamped with tourists like myself. But I wanted to avoid them, and snatch a peek into the everyday life of a Londoner.

That's when I found it. Somewhere in the midst of the tourist-saturated path was this skate park, if that's what you'd call it. The graffiti pulled me in first, then the teens on their skateboards and bikes are what kept my attention. It was like they didn't seem to notice or care about all the commotion around them, they were just here to do their thing. And most of them did it pretty well. I knew it wasn't a show or tourist trap, because there wasn't anywhere to leave a tip for the amazing show they were putting on. I just watched, snapped a few pictures, and shouted some compliments when I decided it was time to move on to my next destination.

As someone who is blessed to travel quite often, I am always looking for that window into the heart of the place I'm visiting, a slice of life that they're accustomed to living. I found it that day in London, and later on that night when I went salsa dancing somewhere off of Tottenham Rd.

5 hours. That's how long we had been riding. And I knew i shouldn't complain since all I had to do was sit there and be a passenger but honestly, I was getting more carsick by the minute. Or should I say vansick. We were in a white 12 passenger van, and there was an eclectic mix of characters: the three Italians who kept up a steady stream of chatter; a couple whose origin I was unsure about but they seemed nice enough; a French-Asian couple who were sweet and helped with translating english to French; the lone German traveler who was down for anything; the driver who took the curves on the mountain path as if we were in a Mercedes AMG; and lastly, my two friends and I who were on the same study abroad program and had decided to travel together to Morocco.

We had collectively decided to take a trip to the Sahara desert to ride camels and sleep under the stars. But the drive from Marrakech to our middle-of-nowhere destination was estimated to take 8 hours. Which meant we were little more than halfway through. I was getting crankier as the day went by, with our trek having started at 7am. It had started out freezing cold in the morning but had progressively warmed up, which was making my stomach even more queasy. I'd had every intention of sleeping the entire ride, but quickly discovered that was going to be impossible since we stopped every hour, and my seat was by the van's only sliding door exit.

Needless to say, I wasn't the least bit surprised when we coasted to a stop. I slowly cracked open one eye, selfishly thinking that if I just pretended to be asleep the other passengers could figure out a way to go around me. But Peri, my English friend from University, reached over and tapped my shoulder saying, "I think you'll want to see this."

She was right.

When I stepped outside of the van, I saw this beautiful city on a hill. Our driver/tour guide called it a kasbah. It was an amazing sight, and seemed to rise out of nowhere. We were allowed to go into the kasbah to explore town. In order to access it, we had to cross a shallow stream on sandbags that had been turned into makeshift stepping stones. It was like a scene from a movie, in every way.

The photo above is of the kasbah, somewhere along the route from Marrakech to the Sahara. Just typing those words, I realize how fortunate I was to have such an experience. That stop gave me a better attitude to make it the rest of the journey in the van, and even though I still wished we had had air-conditioning, I looked forward to more stops and adventures.

"You're about to do hot yoga?" she asked.

"Bikram yoga," I thought to myself, but instead replied with a simple "yes."

"Oh man," she complained into the phone. "That's going to take forever, and I haven't talked to you in such a long time! Didn't you see my missed call earlier? I was calling to tell you that I couldn't talk to you right then but..." I started to space out on her conversation, which was clearly one-sided at the moment. I was standing in the middle of the yoga studio locker room, half undressed and trying to hurry in order get a good spot inside.

"Hey Amira, let me call you back as soon as class is over ok?" I had cut her off mid sentence, but that didn't deter her the least bit.

"Huh? Oh ok well, you know when you're supposed to be laying there all still, and clearing your mind and forgetting your problems? Don't do it, ignore what the teacher says, and think of everything you have to tell me instead."

I laughed, "Ok ok, now get off of my phone." It was what I always said to hurry her off the phone, but she knew it was out of love. Amira was one of my best friends, and she knew the meanings behind all of my seemingly hurtful phrases. That's one of the reasons we worked so well and had stayed friends for so long. She just got me.

Standing alone in the locker room, I realized I was late for class. Great. I hated walking in late, and I would definitely be blaming Amira for this later. I finished getting dressed, grabbed my mat and darted toward class.

Parisian Flowers

I don't assume that everyone has looked through all 1700+ of my photos on my Facebook page (or that you're even my friend), so I have decided to showcase a photo from my library daily, along with the story of the picture...it will justly be called the "Flick of the Day."

The photo featured today is from just outside of the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. I was so enraptured by the garden that sits alongside the iconic church, I had to take a picture. With the sun shining radiantly down on me, as if being in the garden was a blessing in itself, I felt...fulfilled. Of course, the feeling only lasted for the day and after I was on to seek new and even more amazing things, promising never to be satisfied on this journey of life, vowing never to stop yearning for the immaculate beauty I've been granted the senses to behold.

life is flowing smoothly, like water down a stream. I'm settled back into life in the Bay Area (California) and I'm loving every bit of it. doing well on the business end (meaning i have a job). i love to work, i don't like to sit still so it's perfect that i have something to occupy my time.

it's really interesting for me to be a non-student this semester. i mean, i need to stop thinking of things in semesters haha. i have to start using months or seasons, like an adult. i was making a signature for my email, and just writing that I am a graduate and have two degrees is still a bit of a shock. am i suppose to consider myself an adult now? because i still feel like a college kid, but without the going-to-school part haha.

but i'm trying to make moves in all the right directions, steps to better myself each day. i want to live in the City (local terminology for San Francisco) so i'm looking into that. even though i'm originally from the Bay, i moved away before i had the opportunity to really experience all the beauty and activities it has to offer. i think living there is the next step i want to take.

the picture above was actually taken in the City, one day when my friend Terell. i'm still working on my photog skills, but he took this picture so i have to give him his credit. i visit the City more often every week so why not make it my home?!

the question on everyone's mind is: "what are you going to do with your life?" well i don't have the answer to that right now. i don't plan on going back to school (at least not right away). i am living life, experiencing all it has to offer me. that's the most definite my answer can be for the moment, and as things become more concrete i will share the news. so there. lets stop asking me that question, thanks.

on to some things that are more certain. of the following things i am sure:

i will stop biting my nails officially starting today

i am restarting my dedication to veganism

i am training for a 5K race that will be around my birthday (Sept. 29)

yeah so i know i announced on twitter the other day that i was going to stop biting my nails then but i accidentally bit them without thinking about it haha. i'm back on track now though. i just have to actively think about not biting.

next up is the veganism. i am really trying to be dedicated to this. i've been vegan all day today, with the exception of the honey i used on my whole wheat whole grain toast. oh, and the whey protein in my shake this morning. that's it though. so i think i'm doing pretty good. we'll see how the rest of the day goes, night time is usually when i give into weakness

lastly, and something i'm very excited about is training for a 5K race that will take place on Sunday, September 26. i have done some research and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure seems like the perfect cause to start building toward a full marathon. we lost my great grandmother to breast cancer in 1997, so it is a cause that is close to my heart. i will be posting the link to the fundraiser page as soon as registration is all taken care of, so be on the lookout for that.

i am about to head to the gym right now to doing some race training. oh and in case you're wondering why i'm making such a big deal about a 5K (3.1 mile) race, it's because i am NOT a runner. i mean i usually only run when something is chasing me, and that's pushing it haha. so if i could complete a 3 mile race, i would be so proud of myself!

studio time

went to the studio with my sis Sarah and my dad last night. anyone who knows about studio time knows it's all about the late night sesh (abbreviation for session). we laid down a track for Sarah and i did some backgrounds for her. it felt so good to be back in there, i was comfortable in a way that i can't be anywhere else. it's not the same feeling as being on stage though.

i really love that particular studio, too. it's beautiful and relaxing, which all help me get into the zone. anyway it was good to get something out, make it tangible. i'm always amazed at how you can build up harmonies, hearing your own voice being stacked upon itself to create an entire atmosphere within the song. i've found that attempting to describe music with words to be very difficult; it can mean something different to each person.

last night's sesh has inspired me to write with more of a ferocity so that i can get back in the booth again. i had forgotten the joy i feel after knocking down a track, being able to listen to the rough cut on the way back home, really just riding to the jam. it wasn't even my song (i just did her backgrounds) but i loved it so much. it's a classic song so there's no way not to love it. i'm not sure when it'll be completely done but i'll keep you updated.

is this unprecedented for me, 2 posts so close together?! well i just wanted to wish my little brother Booby a happy 15th birthday!!!

we went to dinner tonight, it was a great time being with friends and family. i recently acquired a Sony DSLR camera and i have been experimenting with it for the last 40 minutes. you'll see a few of my attempts in the near future, and hopefully anyone that has tips please send them my way.

well that's it for tonight. i need to get to bed so i can get back on my gym grind tomorrow. i had planned on cycling at 5am but now i'll move that back to 8:30am. goodnight!

heat. hot. sizzling.

all perfect words to describe this summer. and i'm not just talking about temperature! its been a while since my last blog (keeping with my usual trend) but not that much has happened, really. so lets pick up where we left off...

my mom, sis, and aunt came to visit me in Spain, we traveled around and hit up places like Rome and Fez, Morocco. then we came back on June 9th i think and had a bit of downtime. a week or so later the family went to Mississippi while i flew to Texas to get my car and made a road trip from TX to CA. what came next?...oh we went on a family vacation for the 4th of July to Orlando, FL and that was so much fun. we chilled with Mixed Martial Arts fighter James McSweeney and ran into long-time friend Deiondra Sanders at the Universal Studios Theme Park. let me just tell you that Harry Potter land was a.maz.ing. go check it out, seriously.

other than that you are pretty much caught up. i left out things like practicing a little piano and guitar, and working my voice back to its classically-trained days. oh, last night we celebrated my cousin Whitney's birthday in San Francisco and that was a bunch of fun. i'm actually supposed to be at her house right now for lunch but i'm a bit behind schedule haha.

now you're completely caught up, and i have to get out of here before someone calls looking for me. i would promise to keep my blog current, but i don't want to lie to you...

so lets not even pretend to be shocked by the fact that i haven't posted since march. but now, i'm back and super excited! my mommy, along with my aunt and little sister, will be arriving in Spain in about a week. i have been working diligently on our travel plans for the time we're here, make-believing i'm a travel agent or something. anyone who follows my tweets will have seen me vent my frustrations about not being able to get our schedule together. BUT i finally got it right! we'll be hitting up the major parts of Spain, some Italian destinations, and a couple days in Morocco as well. even though i just spent some time in Marrakech (Morocco; where the photo above was taken), i loved it so much that i am more than willing to go back with my family. plus, we'll be going to a different city anyway.

in preparation for our trip, i decided to put together a little video to tease the palettes of mi familia. while i've been traveling around europe, i usually don't take my laptop but this time i will, so maybe i'll be able to post day by day on our little vacay. making the video got me excited, and hopefully it does the same for my mama, aunt and sis.

but in other news, i have had to modify my plans for my spring break (which is more formally known as Semana Santa). as sad as it is that i won't be going to Greece anymore, i am happy to say that i will be attending the Corinne Bailey Rae performance, and i am SO excited about that! i cannot believe i am going to get to hear her amazingness. i just adore her, seriously. well i think that is all i have to tell you now haha

noche sin sueños

because i have to give everything a name or title, or classify it in some way, i declare any entries that are made during late nights or nights when i haven't slept as "noche sin sueños." so anyway, this is basically a continuation from my Twitter account.

"@akeiba: can't sleep, but what's new. so instead, i'm reading about the randomest things: Choctaw indians (my ancestors), Veganism, hotels in Greece."

First up, here is some basic knowledge about the Choctaw Native Americans. We (and i say we very loosely, as i am only 1/16th Choctaw) descend from the Mississippian culture, and were considered one of the five "civilized" tribes due to our cooperation and adoption of many European traditions. Choctaws were exiled and was one of the first peoples to walk the Trail of Tears. They have been recognized for their extraordinary humanitarian efforts for the Irish during the Great Irish Famine. So there is a bit of a history lesson for us haha. Yes, this is what i do with my extra time, and why i hope to one day go on Jeopardy to test my random knowledge.

Secondly, i have learned more about Veganism and why it is beneficial in so many ways. Yeah, i'm not doing so hot with the whole don't-eat-products-of-animals thing, but back to the benefits... mostly for our health as individuals, but also collectively we could reduce carbon dioxide side emissions immensely, thus slowing down the effects of global warming! look at this quote:

"According to a 2006 study done by researchers at the University of Chicago, most Americans can reduce more greenhouse gas emissions by becoming a vegan than they can by switching to a hybrid electric car"

Now i feel like i can still do my part to reduce my personal emissions in some way because honestly, i don't see myself buying a hybrid car anytime soon. Needless to say, i was quite excited to find out this little tidbit of info.

And lastly, Greece. I'm not leaving Europe without visiting, so i am planning a trip. I must Must MUST go to Athens and Santorini. i've just been looking at pictures so there's nothing really to post. but i will update you as soon as i know some info.

the time has come

sitting here, awake, at approximately 4:40am, i have decided to become VEGAN. as of this very moment, i am not completely educated in the ways of veganism, and it is therefore safe to say that i am choosing this lifestyle right now for numerous vain reasons, though health is a another huge factor. the site above is a really great place to get more info on the lifestyle if you're interested. i'm finding that i have already been heading toward this path without even making the conscious decision. i've always wanted to be vegan but i just can't imagine a life without chocolate or cheese or other various dairy products. but after doing some reading about a pure vegetarian lifestyle, i've decided to consciously start working towards eliminating animal products and their bi-products from my life. the way i see it, i harm the environment enough in other ways, so this is my way of balancing it out. i am blaming my diet for my insomniac-tendencies, and for the fact that i'm always tired even when i manage to get some rest. plus, i really don't think my body likes animal products, i know for a fact that milk doesn't agree with me (and that goes for its offspring, such as yogurt, ice cream, etc.). blah blah blah. as i take my vegan journey, i'll let you know how it goes.

in other news, i went to Barcelona this weekend and it was great! i absolutely adore that city and i MUST visit again before i leave. i went with my friends Kit-Kat, Little J, and Ty-Ty. And i made a new friend Big Al who was so nice for showing us around and taking us to the best of the best in the city. anyway, we had too much fun. but right now i'm trying to watch Almost Famous so i'll throw together a photo slideshow a little later. much love

Vegetarian Chili Recipe

I just realized that i have only posted one recipe, and that was for the fajitas (i'm glad y'all liked them)! but one of my other favorite dishes to make is this meatless chili, it's SO good! i found this recipe online and I want to make sure I give credit to its author so i'm just going to give you the link. Click here for the recipe. now as usual, i alter the recipe to my liking. i personally don't like the taste of jalepeños so i just don't put them in. And i add the corn way before it says to in the directions. oh and i only use 2 cans of tomatoes. so basically, i just do my own thing and follow this as a guide haha. especially out here in spain, because i haven't been able to find all of the ingredients in the grocery store. so try it out, let me know if you like it (or let me know if you don't). i'll think of what other things i like to cook and post more at some point.

i know what you're thinking

you're probably saying to yourself, "this girl NEVER updates her blog." well you're right, if that's what you're thinking. so i decided to come on here and make a post. to give you the abbreviated version of my life up to this point, i have been here in spain, having a great time, better learning the language and experiencing a new culture. i like the school i attend, and i'm learning some things i never had the chance to while at UT (it's not that we didn't have them i just didn't have time to take the classes). i've met so many wonderful people here, and i am making friends for life! One of my good friends here is my girl Sharmaine, she and i go salsa dancing all the time together and if you know me at all, then you know that dancing is a MUST in my life haha.
so now you're pretty much up to speed, and i will try to keep you current as time goes on. Oh, another reason i am posting is to put up this little video i finally finished. it is from my pre-departure from home, on my way to spain. it's also on my YouTube page.

Anyway, I am currently getting ready for this event that Sharmaine and i are semi-hosting. so, out here in Pamplona, we're not exactly up-to-speed with all the latest and greatest hits of the United States. We have decided to solve that by using the playlists from multiple iPods (thank goodness for iTunes!) and have a dance party event at the local club/bar. hopefully it's a success so we can have it multiple times, and i can't wait to hear all this music on a real sound system with some bass. ta ta for now, darlings.

my "aha" moment!

so i've had an epiphany (everytime i use that word i think of chrisette michele haha)! since i am getting ready to graduate, the question everyone keeps asking me what i'm going to do with my life lol. i didn't really have a single answer for them because i feel like there are so many options in life that i can't just pick one thing i'd like to do. i don't like feeling limited, ya know?! but as i was going through the list of things i'd enjoy doing forever, there was always one common denominator: helping people. no matter what career path i imagined, it always came back to helping people. be it through small efforts or large, i truly just enjoy helping other people. so with that said, can you guess what i want to be when i grow up?? well i'll tell you: i want to be a humanitarian. and i don't care if i'm never publicly recognized for my efforts because it is satisfaction enough to know that helped someone else who needed it. seriously. i know that sounds a little cliche or ambitious or whatever, but it is what i have decided. just wanted to share that with you. now that i've acknowledged my path, i also realize that i'm going to have to find ways to fund my passion of helping other people hahaha...but i will worry about that in the days to come Peace Love Blessings AMB(itious) p.s. the video has absolutely nothing to do with this post haha, i just added it to my youtube page so i'm putting it here as well

i take way too much time between my blog updates. i always have the intention to update it at least once a week, and i almost get it done....but everybody knows almost doesn't count (thanks for those fine words from Brandy).
i think the main reason i haven't blogged recently because nothing too much has been going on. aside from our show HAMMERTIME on A&E (which had its season finale this past sunday), i've just been going to classes and trying to keep up with school work. i will be finished with summer classes soon but then it's time for the fall semester to start so...adios to my summer vacation haha. it's not all bad though. i just went to Houston this weekend with my my good friend and we had fun.
i know many of y'all who read my blog also follow me on twitter, and i see that a few of you have requested vegetarian recipes...i have no problem sharing my food ideas with y'all but for the most part i just take recipes off-line then end up doctoring them to my specific taste. i just keep adding to or subtracting from the original until i get what i want. so i suppose in that way, it is uniquely my own recipe. but i don't measure things, so i don't know how to tell you what i added haha. i'll try though ;-)
a lot of you have also been asking me about this hot yoga that i do. i don't think it's really called "hot yoga" but that's what i call it. it's a yoga class, usually consisting of 34 poses, that is done in a room that is about 90-100 degrees and 50-60% humidity. i have always wanted to do yoga and this method seems to be really good for me. i recommend you try it at least once. just look for studios near you, and make sure the instructors are well-trained so that you don't injure yourself. i got my twin-darlings and my girl Krys to try it out with me and i think they like it so far.
oh my goodness i watched this show called Dance Your A** Off on monday night and i loved it. if you follow me on twitter then you should know by now how much i love to dance! i went salsa dancing last night actually. anyway, the show is amazing and i want to be on it hahaha. i don't remember what channel but i'm gonna find it again. the video below is of sammy dancing his little behind off on stage at my dad's concert in vegas!

Veggie Fajitas from HAMMERTIME

ok my dearest darlings, you asked for it so here it is! this is the recipe for the fajitas i cooked on the show last night. they could be considered vegan i think if you don't add any animal products for your toppings or side dishes.

no before i give you the recipe you must understand one thing: i cooked these for CARNIVORES hahaha! i say that because i made them extra hearty so my family wouldn't miss the meat. oh and i should just tell you now that i don't measure things or write them down when i cook so i'm just going to give you all the ingredients, then you can season to taste when it comes to spices. sorry if you don't like this method but it's the way i cook. plus it should be fun for you to experiment. and if you end up hating it, my feelings won't be hurt. i'm just glad you gave it a try anyway ;-)

1 large sweet onion
3 bell peppers (of varying colors to make the dish pretty haha)
1 zucchini
1 container of fresh, pre-sliced mushrooms (canned works but fresh are better)
fresh cilantro
1 can black beans
1 can whole kernel sweet corn
olive oil
taco/fajita seasoning packet
chili powder
cumin
salt
pepper
fajita tortillas (i prefer corn but most people like flour)
shredded cheese
salsa
guacamole
sour cream

i suggest that you buy organic produce but it's not a necessity. so you can start by chopping all the veggies. the bell peppers should be cut into strips (like strips of fajita chicken or steak). and you can leave the mushrooms since they are already pre-cut, or you can half them again.
saute the onions first in the olive oil, adding in the bell peppers, then zuchinni, and lastly the mushrooms & cilantro. add the seasonings (except cumin), but be careful with the chili powder since it revs up the spicy factor. let cook for a while til veggies are coated in the seasonings and tender, but don't overcook!
in a separate pot, combine the beans and corn. season them with the cumin, salt & pepper. the reason i make it in another pan is because i don't like the beans to be all over everything else. plus it gives you a little control over how hearty you want these fajitas to be. now you're done!
if you warm the tortillas in an oven first, i've found that they're easier to handle. to plate it presentably, put down a tortilla then the bean/corn combo (or not if you don't want to), then add the veggie mix. finish with your favorite toppings. i personally like everything except sour cream.

i hope y'all enjoy the fajitas. these are just the bones of the recipe, add your own touches plus your family to make it genuinely yours ;-)

it's about time, right?!if you follow me on twitter then you know i have been talking about updating my blog for some time now. and of course, at 2:27am i am sitting here blogging, night time is the right time, people!

so what have i been up to, you may ask? i have just mostly been focusing on summer classes here at UT Austin. Oh and also our family show Hammertime premiered on June 14th @10/9C on A&E and there will be another new episode this sunday, so tune in (please & thank you!).

let's see, what else?! hmmm...i went to las vegas with my family last weekend, and it was amazing! my dad put on a great show (as ever), sarah, jeremiah and i got to sing, while booby got down with papa bear on the dance moves! then, to sum it all up, i got to spend father's day with the most amazing man in the world, my daddy. nothing is better than family, always remember that.

i'm sure there are other things that occurred in my life but i can't remember haha. i will keep you updated much more often. but also follow me on twitter, i tweet throughout the day so that's a good way to keep in contact with me. have a good night y'all

just wanted to put up a quick post before i go to sleep. since my last post, i have been spending a lot if time with my family. i traveled to Mississippi for my cousin's graduation, came back to austin for my roommate's grad (plus some other good friends), and this past weekend i went home to California for my little bother's grad from 8th grad and my cousin's high school grad. i took my good friend home with me and she got to meet the crazy fam, she says she had a good time. i will post some pictures soon.

also, the HammerTime A&E website has been updated with some cool new info, where you can see family photos and get some brief introductions to each family member. i can't wait for the show to start! June 14th @10/9C.

oh yes, i made it!

i had my two exams today, one in biology and one in english literature, and now i am finally finished for the semester. i feel pretty good about the EngLit test, i was able to write some very detailed answers about the majority of the questions asked. but then came the bio exam, ruining everything i was happy about. i studied, but it seems i studied things not asked on the exam. that's the problem with multiple choice, you can't explain or reason your way through. just bubble in an answer. but what is done is done, and "que sera, sera." i can't change what i've already finished so there is no use in worrying myself about it. plus, i'm glad to be finally finished for the semester!

so now i am just chillin, taking a little time to relax and unwind after all the tension of my studies. it was definitely more of a challenge than i expected keeping up with my schoolwork this semester. and summer school is right around the corner, so i don't have that much of a break ahead of me. but that's alright, you know what they say about idle hands...so i like to stay busy.

i'm so excited and proud that two of my cousins will be graduating from high school this month! Big achievement, and keep on striving for more knowledge. Congratulations Shanterrica Graham and Jamaris Knighten!! i love y'all both, and will be there to see you accept your diplomas. so that means i have some traveling in my very near future ;-)

that's right! y'all know what time it is haha! i was so excited when i saw the commercial for our show for the first time today. the website is still under construction at A&E but you can check it out, watch the commercial. HammerTime will premiere on Sunday June 14th at 10/9C so tune in to see me and my wonderful family! i will hit you with more info as i get it.

School's out!!

yessss!! school is done. well for this semester. and i don't know why i'm even that excited, because i have 2 finals on May 16th, and then i start summer school not too long after that. but whatever, let me not rain on my own parade.

this is a picture one of my friends snapped while we were out celebrating the end of the semester. we were dancing up a storm haha, and i had a good time just being out and not worrying about anything being due for one of my classes!

i want to take this time to say congratulations
to all my friends who are graduating this semester. i am more proud of y'all than you know, and i can't wait to see all of you succeed in your future endeavors. i will be moving onward and upward with y'all soon enough.

so now i'm about to go do some hot yoga, then i'm gonna keep organizing my life and getting everything at my house in order. i feel so displaced because my room is a mess and things are not where they should be, so i need to handle that ASAP.

dear darlings (i think that's my new fave term or endearment),

i am finally sitting down to give you a necessary update of what's going on with me. i already apologized for the months of down time so that's out of the way! Whew, i'm assuming you forgive me if you're reading this, but you know what they say about assuming haha...

anyway, i am very excited to announce that my family and i will be premiering in a show on A&E called Hammertime! it's gonna be great, and i'm super excited about it. the show starts in June (i will get you a more specific date as soon as i'm sure) so look out for us!

next line of business is this whole school thing. i am sooo ready for the semester to be over. don't get me wrong, i'm as geeky as they come and i love learning, but i am just so done with this semester. it's gone by quickly but at the same time not quick enough (if that makes any sense). i still have 2 major projects, a presentation, a short research paper, an evaluation, plus 3 final exams (*takes a breath*). just wanted to vent about that for a sec but now i'm good.

lastly, i should be packing right now, getting ready for my flight that's in less than 5 hours. i am currently in California at home with the family (we had to shoot a commercial and wrap some things up for the show), but i'm heading back to Austin to make it back in time for classes monday morning. Yeesh, talk about craziness!

broken resolution!

9 days into the new year and one of my resolutions are already broken! i said that i wanted to blog daily but obviously that hasn't happened haha! it has been 4 days since my last post....that's ok, i hope i am forgiven...

i am now back in austin, chillin with my girls and just having a good time. but most importantly i am getting things in order and ready for the semester. i had to borrow some cables from my neighbor so i could jumpstart my car lol, and i also had to get some air in my tires. i still haven't started unpacking yet but i have only been here a day so that's not too bad.

my friends video'd my ordeal of trying to use the jumper-cables and i will post that as soon as i load it from my camera. well that is all...this is a pic from my last night in California with my two favorite men!

i really cannot believe that it is already 2009! with the start of every new year comes those ridiculous resolutions, goals we set for ourselves that are somehow unattainable. i'm going for things that are challenging but also realistic. my top 5? let's see....

1. get in the best shape i can, both physically and mentally
2. get at least a 3.8 GPA this semester
3. save at least 10% of all the money i make
4. consistently further my skills and talents (write music, work on video projects, blog daily lol)
5. raise enough money to send myself to Costa Rica for 3 weeks, to help teach english to children in rural areas (more info to come on this project soon!)

we're just 3 days into the new year, and i already know for a fact that some exciting things will be taking place. as some may know i was supposed to be going to england to study abroad this semester, but i have postponed that trip, replacing it with an amazing opportunity. what is it, you may ask...well i don't want to tell you just yet, but you can be sure that this is the first place i will put all the details. and when the whole thing starts, this will be where i add all details and constantly update.

anyone have any other rez's that you wanna share? if you post them, we can hold each other accountable for achieving them haha. check up on me and ask me how much progress i've made toward my goals, and i will do the same for you!

ok so i had planned to blog the day after elections, but some of the overtly prejudiced comments i read on facebook almost ruined my joyous mood. anyway, i am happy that Obama took the title....also, i hope everyone remembers that it is Veteran's Day

hmmmm on an entirely different note, i got my new passport today! my old one had expired, and since i will be studying abroad in the spring, i needed to renew it. it's so hi-tech, and i think they are making them nearly impossible to fake now. i'm happy with my picture and can't wait to fill the pages with my travels!

my weekend was not too eventful....i went salsa dancing on thusday and friday night, watched the UT vs. Baylor game on saturday (which we won), then celebrated our victory that night by going downtown with my girls. as usual, we had a good time

in preparation for the release of Twilight, i have decided to re-read the first book. i felt like i needed a refresher haha. yall should read it too, and go see the movie on its opening night

i am thrilled that i will be voting for the first time tomorrow. i hope you are too, if you're old enough. i wasn't able to last election, but now i am definitely going to do what i can by voting. in case anyone has any doubts, i am pro-Obama and anti-McCain...i have honestly given both candidates a fair chance, starting them at 50-5o, giving and taking points for whose policies and beliefs i agree with. McCain currently has -2 so that says a lot haha...ultimately, i like Obama because he is at a prime age, has an open mind but knows when to take a firm stance, and mostly because he is about change and progress. i am not here to sway anyone's vote one way or another, and while i am for him, i encourage everyone (yes, even the McCain supporters) to get to the polls and vote!

p.s. i just want to let everyone know that i am not against people who are for McCain....if i loved you as a person before then it will still be the same after tomorrow...we will just agree to disagree when it comes to politics and what we think is better for this country ;-)

so i realize i am getting a little ridiculous with this whole blog thing...it has been an entire month since i made my last post, and that is unacceptable! but to be honest, not too much is going on out here in Austin, Texas. i go to school, then come home and work on things for school haha...oh i also go salsa dancing. that's pretty fun, and i'm kinda addicted now

hmmm what else? oh earlier this year i declared myself a vegetarian, and now my family's favorite question is "are you still not eating meat?" hahaha....i think they suppose it's a phase i am going through, but honestly it's a life choice.

other than that, all is pretty much the same. OHH i almost forgot to mention that i will be studying abroad in the spring! isn't that exciting?? i can't wait for january to come so that i can head overseas! i will give more details as i get them, but right now i have to get ready for class....peace and much love!!

In april, i was on a show called Rock The Cradle on MTV. it was the network's first reality singing show, and it was an amazing experience. i met a lot of great people and made many new friends (even though the show might have had you think otherwise lol). i love singing and performing, and even though i didn't win, i really did have fun! these are some pics from the show, and a little video too. the beautiful dress i am wearing in the photos is from igigi.com. i absolutely LOVE igigi, and if you're looking for something stylish you should head over and check them out! well there is still so much to do around the house, with all the renovations still taking place at my parent's house, so i have to go...here's the video

ok so lets talk about this book. the entire twilight saga has been my obsession for the past 2 weeks. i would stay up all night and read through each book....then i had to wait from tuesday to midnight on friday for the special release party at the bookstore. yes, i really did go to the midnight release party of the book, and i stayed up all night reading it as soon as i got back to the house! unlike some, i really LOVED the book and it's ending. i felt soo complete and there was a great sense of closure. i can't believe it's over.....so i'm going to read it again! hahaha. yeah, that's how absorbed i get into my books. i would recommend all of the Twilight saga books by Stephenie Meyer. does anyone want to talk about any of the books? oh, or about the actors they have cast for the movie?? i'm not sure yet how i feel about that, but they are growing on me

sorry for not writing yesterday, the time jut got away from me. some news i just received today is that i will be going to Macy's Glamorama in Minneapolis and Chicago with my dad, on August 15 and August 22. what an interesting headliner, MC Hammer and Cyndi Lauper!! it's going to be a great show, plus fashion. So if anyone is going to the event, hopefully i will see you there!!

after only 5 days, our floors have been transformed from carpet to hardwood! and let me be the first to say, it looks really sexy haha!

other eventful news is that i did some tweaking to the track i made, so it's getting there but not all the way right yet. i was also sent a few tracks today, and my dad and i had a jam session, just exploring the possibilities. there was one that i loved so much, we basically wrote the song while listening to it lol. i can't wait to really do some things with it

and last night, after leaving the salsa club at midnight and driving for over an hour to get home, i met up with my family to have a studio session. we all hit the booth and recorded a little bit...i won't tell you what it's for quite yet but just know BIG things are in the works so stay tuned.

now i plan to have a chill weekend with my 2 old roommates from freshman year. i will make sure to take some pics and post them after the weekend, this will be my last blog til monday, but you can catch updates on my twitter.

i can't believe that it's already the end of july! today has been somewhat uneventful, with the exception of me knocking out a beat. i'm actually very excited about it, and i'm already writing some lyrics. i love projects that are completely me, because i have total control. even thought the song is just in the beginning phase, i can feel that it's a song of passion.
tonight i'm gonna go salsa dancing in San Francisco. i haven't decided which club yet, but you'll know when i know, since i will post it to my twitter.
oooh, some exciting news: just two days ago i was invited to the 2008 Flow Conference. it's a media-centered conference, and they have asked me to comment on reality tv. i'm ecstatic, but it's not until october 9-11! so i have a little while haha!
well i have to get ready to take my little brothers to football practice in a little while....

utter chaos!!

oooh my goodness! the last few days have been simply crazy....my parents are doing some remodeling to the house, and of course i'm trying to help a little, so it has just been chaotic! packing up stuff as though we were moving, planning out new bedrooms, picking out paint choices! it's so funny because i won't even get to live in all the new beauty, i'll be back in Austin, Texas as soon as it's done. it's coming along very nicely, and i can wait to see the end result, though i think that is a LONG way off
i have been spending a lot of time reading these days....i am completely obsessed with the Twilight Saga, and have read all 3 books in the last 4 days! i know, i'm crazy, but once i picked it up, i couldn't put it down until the end! now i'm sitting around anxiously waiting for the 4th book, called Breaking Dawn, to be released on August 2nd. the anticipation is killing me, and i can't wait to find out what happens! i get so engrossed in a story, it's ridiculous. now i need another book to read until i can get my hands on that one haha

Something a little bit different

well for the past week or so i have been exploring the world of vegetarianism. i am doing it more for health reasons than anything else, because i was recently informed about all the toxins and hormones that come from meat, specifically chicken (which i absolutely love, but feel it's not worth the health risk!). And i have already been replacing dairy with soy products for quite some time now. i have been feeling a little bit more energetic, plus it's been really great cooking eith all these different vegetables! i don't have to worry about any diseases if the food is undercooked. the only thing is i need more recipes to support this new lifestyle....any suggestions??

i just got back from Tampa, Florida and i must admit it was an amazing trip! i was so honored when i got to sing the national anthem before the Tampa Rays vs Toronto Blue Jays game (which the Rays won!)...then after the game, my dad put on a spectacular concert as part of an entertainment series the Rays have for the summer home games. as usual, he wowed the crowd, and i even got to sing on one of the songs with him! there were THOUSANDS of people there, and i absolutely loved it!! and to top it all off, they presented me with a customized Tampa Rays baseball jersey! i'm a fan for life.
on sunday, after the rest of the entourage had returned home, the family and i celebrated my little brother's 13th birthday by heading to Busch Garden in Tampa. i really think that this is the best theme park i have ever been to, with all the great roller-coasters and many different animals. the craziest ride there is called Shekrah (?), and it has an almost 90degree drop! i was screaming as soon as the ride started haha....but my favorite ride was Mantu. it was such a great time, i wish we could have stayed longer.

sooo.....i guess i should begin by welcoming everyone to my blog page! i don't know why it took me so long to get one lol! my dad was like "you don't have a blog? oh, you gotta get up on that!" so i took his advice and now here we are.
Right now i am chillin in california with my family but i will be back in austin soon enough. i have been away from school for what seems like forever! i guess you can say i'm a bit of a nerd, and i take that as a compliment...i really enjoy learning new things, especially since i major in music production and film production, 2 of my passions.
This summer has been great so far, and i'm just really blessed to have such great family and friends. i went to the Glow in the Dark concert which featured Lupe Fiasco, NERD, Rihanna, and Kanye West! the entire show was absolutely AMAZING! we got to meet Mr. West backstage after the show and he is such a nice person, and he has a really good sense of humor! great experience, fun times, and beautiful memories...many more to come
